One of the largest millipede species in the world and a classic first millipede. Hardy, gentle-tempered, and widely kept. Well-documented captive care makes this an excellent entry point into tropical millipede husbandry.

Research notes
Deep coconut fiber and rotten hardwood mix. Minimum 4–6 inches depth. Leaf litter on top.
75–80 °F. Consistent warmth is important. A heat mat on one side works well.
75–80% RH. Mist regularly. Substrate should hold shape when squeezed but not drip.
Rotting hardwood, leaf litter, cucumber, sweet potato, carrot, squash. Cuttlebone for calcium.
Large footprint enclosure — these are big animals. A 40-gallon breeder tank or equivalent is suitable for adults.
Generally calm and tolerant of handling. Still wash hands after — secretions can stain.
Mild benzoquinone secretions. Much milder than many other species. Still wash hands.
